Hornets Trade Tyson Chandler for Emeka Okafor Wednesday, Jul 29 2009

emekaokaforhornetsAt first glance most New Orleans Hornets fans might think this is a mistake, but if you hadn’t noticed last season, Tyson Chandler was on his way out one way or the other and this trade gives the Hornets much more in return than what the Oklahoma City Thunder were offering last season when they tried to make a trade using Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox.

There is no mistaking that Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler are good friends and connected a lot on the basketball floor. Those alley oop dunks seem to happen two or three times a game, but now that is over and I believe the Hornets have gotten a much better all around player in return.

Emeka Okafor is a double-double machine! The only other player in the league that he compares to in my opinion is Elton Brand as they both have similar personalties and play very similar on the floor. Brand may have the scoring edge, but with a new role in New Orleans Okafor might not be too far behind him.

Okafor may not have the defensive prowess that Chandler has, but he does give the Hornets a better inside presence on offense which Chandler couldn’t give you. There probably won’t be as many high flying alley oops dunks that you got with Chandler, but I think Okafor could turn into a premier forward in this league with the help of Chris Paul.

Both the Charlotte Bobcats and the New Orleans Hornets should benifit from this trade. I don’t know if it turns the Hornets back into title contenders, but it could if Okafor flurishes in Byron Scott’s system.

Nuggets End Hornets Win Streak Despite Big Night from Chris Paul Monday, Jan 5 2009

Coming into this game the Hornets were missing their defensive beast in the middle Tyson Chandler do to one game suspension from his altercation with the Joel Przybilla. Without Chandler defending the paint the Hornets were vulnerable to the Nuggets penetration.

With Chandler out and the Hornets playing on the Nuggets home floor in Denver where they have only lost 4 games this season, New Orleans chances were slim, but Chris Paul turned it on by lighting up the Nuggets for 30 points while dishing out 11 assists and 3 steals.

Even though Paul’s numbers were pretty impressive, not all parts of his stats sheet were favorable as he also turned the ball over 7 times.

As for the Nuggets they had were firing on all cylinders with all five starters scoring in double figures and 17 points from JR Smith off the bench. Chauncey Billups did have a poor shooting night only hitting 2 of 9 from the field, but he was perfect at the line going 9 for 9 and was able to dish out 6 assists as well as 2 steals.

Carmelo Anthony lead all scorers on the Nuggets with 22 points and ripped down 7 boards in the process.

Besides Chris Paul, David West and Peja Stojakovic had a decent night on the offensive end with West dropping 21 points and Peja with 19.

Although the game came down to the wire, James Posey wasn’t able to seal the deal from deep like he has been known to do. After an off balanced three point attempt from Posey, Hornets win streak ended at 4 games while the Nuggets win streak improves to three games in a row after this win over New Orleans 105-100.

Tyson Chandler Sits Out Against Denver Due to Suspension Monday, Jan 5 2009

Hornets Trail Blazers Basketball

Tyson Chandler is arguably the best defense player (at least in the paint) for the Hornets, being the very core of the New Orleans Hornets defense, not having against a team like the Denver Nuggets is a major blow.

Chandler was suspended by the league after an altercation with center Joel Przybilla when the Hornets took on the Portland Trailblazers on Friday. The reason for the suspension was a due to Chandler delivering a vicious elbow to Przybilla’s chest.

Once you see the reply of the altercation between both Przybilla and Chandler you can tell that he was getting physical, but I am surprised that the league only suspended Chandlers for one game with a fine of $7,500.

Chandler just lost his cool, that is what it comes down to and he is damn lucky the league didn’t bring down a much harsher penalty. Pryzbilla was also fined $7,500 for his role in the incident.

Tough Road Trip Schedule Ahead for the Hornets Friday, Jan 2 2009

Wizards Hornets Basketball

The Western conference competition isn’t getting any easy, even the Eastern conference has gotten tougher this season with the Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers playing like legitimate championship contenders, so if the New Orleans Hornets still want to be able to contend down the stretch they have to be on their game the whole way through.

Even though the Hornets are on top of the Southwest division with only 9 losses and 19 wins, the division is about as tough as they come with three other teams just waiting for the Hornets to slip up and give away the division lead.

Just as everyone says, every season, the San Antonio Spurs are getting older and could be just one season or one bad string of losses from being a mediocre team, but one thing about that Spurs that is amazing to me is their resolve and knack for always overcoming adversity. With that being said you can never count them out in the Southwest.

The Houston Rockets on the other hand came into this season with NBA championship aspirations after they got their hands on defensive specialist Ron Artest. The Rockets have always been one of the better defensive teams in the league, but with the addition of Artest they can be suffocating on defense. The biggest problem with the Rockets is their injury problems to their superstars which seems to happen every season guaranteed. Whether it is Tracy McGrady’s back problems or Yao Ming struggling to stay healthy, their always seems to be someone out of the lineup every night. When they are healthy though, they are as tough as they come and can compete with anyone.

The Dallas Mavericks are the dark horse in this division in my opinion, either they are playing as good as anyone in the league or they are as beatable as some of the worst teams in the NBA. I think they are flawed and are missing a piece to the puzzle in order to be a serious threat in the West.

As for the Hornets, they struggled in the beginning and have lost some forgettable games lately like the loss to the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic on Christmas, but I am sure they will rebound and get back to playing basketball at a high level.

They will need to play at a high level over the four games because there will be no easy wins going up against their next four opponents away from New Orleans.

First off the Hornets will go into one of the hardest places to win in the NBA, the Rose Garden in Portland. The Blazers are playing some very impressive and inspired basketball lately, especially after taking down the defending champion Boston Celtics.

After the Blazers Chris Paul and company will go to Denver to take on Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony and company. The Nuggets have been nothing but successful after making the blockbuster trade sending Allen Iverson to Detroit in exchange for point guard Chauncey Billups.

The biggest test of this road trip will be against arguably the best team in the league, the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers are flying high after beating the Celtics on Christmas day and will be ready for the Hornets especially the pounding they gave them recently.

Finally, the Hornets will take on Deron Williams and the Utah Jazz. Although the Jazz have had injury problems this season, they have still played at a high level even without Carlos Boozer.

If Chris Paul can lead his boys to at least two wins on this road trip it will be a success in my eyes.
